The « VerSus » project’s main objective is to gain knowledge from the fundamental lessons and principles of the vernacular architecture and to explore new ways of integrating those principles into modern sustainable building techniques. It intends to follow up the work, the contacts and the network established during the projects « Terra Incognita I & II ».
VerSus research project was based on the identification of strategies and principles within vernacular heritage, in order to define a conceptual approach for sustainable architectural design. Based on the review of literature and the analysis and interpretation of case studies from vernacular and contemporary architecture, data was collected and a research method was developed to provide operative knowledge that could be integrated on design studio processes, in order to improve the sustainability of contemporary architecture, at environmental, social and economical levels.

Labelled as a “success story” by the European Commission, the VerSus project has also been awarded in 2017 a European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention AADIPA (category D – Dissemination).
